Unicode to Bijoy Converter | ইউনিকোড থেকে বিজয়

The Unicode to Bijoy converter (ইউনিকোড টু বিজয়) turns standard Unicode Bangla — the text you see on websites, Wikipedia and social media — into Bijoy's ANSI format for use with the SutonnyMJ font.

Print media still runs on Bijoy: books, magazines, newspapers and DTP software such as InDesign, PageMaker and QuarkXPress expect ANSI Bangla text. Unicode content pasted into those tools breaks or refuses to compose properly. Converting it to Bijoy first, then applying SutonnyMJ, gives clean, press-ready text.

How to Convert Unicode to Bijoy

  1. Copy your Unicode Bangla text from a website, Wikipedia or anywhere else.
  2. Paste it into the Unicode box above — the Bijoy version appears immediately in the box on the left.
  3. Click the blue Copy button to take the text, paste it into MS Word or InDesign, and select SutonnyMJ as the font.
  4. If you notice anything wrong in a conjunct, press Fix Broken Words.

Why Print and DTP Still Need Bijoy

The whole web has moved to Unicode, yet the printing world still stands on Bijoy. The reasons are practical:

  • Older software — the versions of PageMaker and QuarkXPress still running in presses cannot compose Unicode Bangla properly.
  • Existing templates — newspaper pages, book layouts and advertising designs have been built around SutonnyMJ for years. Change the font and the whole layout shifts.
  • Trained staff — compositors type fast on the Bijoy layout, and retraining an entire team is expensive.
  • Letterform design — ANSI fonts made for print have their conjuncts drawn individually, which many publishers prefer.

So taking text from the web into print always needs this conversion step in between.

Installing and Applying the SutonnyMJ Font

To see the converted text correctly, you have to apply an ANSI Bangla font wherever you paste it. Without that it looks like English letters — which is not an error, it just means the font has not been applied yet.

  • In MS Word: paste the text and select it, then choose SutonnyMJ from the font list. To apply it to the whole document, press Ctrl+A first and then change the font.
  • In Adobe InDesign: paste into the text frame and apply SutonnyMJ from the Character panel.
  • If you do not have the font: SutonnyMJ comes with the Bijoy software. It is Ananda Computers' own font, so we do not distribute it — see the SutonnyMJ font page for the details, which also covers the free alternatives.

Tip: always print one sample page and check the conjuncts before a full print run — text can look right on screen while a different version of the font shapes it slightly differently.

Taking Avro-Typed Text Into Bijoy

When you type on the Avro keyboard, what you produce is Unicode — Avro is not a separate encoding, only a keyboard layout. So any text typed in Avro can be taken into Bijoy with this same tool; nothing extra is needed.

Many people call this job "Avro to Bijoy", and there is a separate page for it: Avro to Bijoy. If you want to type in Unicode, use the online Avro keyboard or the Unicode Editor (Bijoy layout). To handle both directions in one box, use the Bangla Converter homepage.

What to Do About Conjunct Problems

Going from Unicode to Bijoy, conjuncts are the hardest part. In Unicode a conjunct is built by joining letters with hasant (্), but in Bijoy many conjuncts have their own single code. Reconciling the two systems can leave a word or two mis-shaped.

  • After converting, press Fix Broken Words once — the known patterns will be corrected.
  • Before printing, pay special attention to words with ত্ন, ্ব, ্র, ্য — for example যত্ন, রত্ন, উচ্ছ্বাস, স্ত্রী.
  • For a long document, convert it paragraph by paragraph rather than all at once — mistakes are much easier to spot.

Converting Whole Files, and Downloading

  • Open File — upload a .docx or .txt directly; with Word files the bold, italic and table formatting is kept through the conversion.
  • .doc download — take the result out as a Word file, with the font already applied.
  • Recent work — your last few conversions are kept in your browser.
  • Privacy — everything happens in your browser and your text is never sent anywhere, which matters for an unpublished manuscript.

Who uses Unicode to Bijoy conversion?

Newspaper compositors preparing web stories for the print edition, publishers reusing online articles in books and magazines, and office staff who collect reference text from Bangla websites for Word documents. Anyone whose final output goes through SutonnyMJ needs this conversion — and since Avro produces Unicode, this same tool covers the Avro to Bijoy workflow too. For the opposite direction, see the Bijoy to Unicode converter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Unicode to Bijoy conversion free?

Yes, completely free, and no registration is needed.

Why does the text look like English letters after converting?

That is normal. Bijoy works on the ANSI system — the text only appears as Bangla once you apply the SutonnyMJ font. In Word, select the text and choose SutonnyMJ from the font list.

Where do I get the SutonnyMJ font?

It is Ananda Computers' own font and comes with the Bijoy software. We do not distribute the font. See the SutonnyMJ font page for details and free alternatives.

Can I take Avro-typed text into Bijoy?

Yes. Text typed in Avro is Unicode, so this tool handles it — nothing extra is needed.

Why are some conjuncts not coming out right?

In Unicode a conjunct is built with hasant, while in Bijoy many conjuncts have their own single code. Press Fix Broken Words once, and before printing check words containing ত্ন, ্ব, ্র.

Can I convert a whole Word file at once?

Yes. Use Open File to upload a .docx — bold, italic and table formatting is kept through the conversion.

Does my text go to your server?

No. The whole conversion happens in your browser, so unpublished or confidential writing stays safe.

The text breaks when I paste it into InDesign

After pasting into the text frame, apply SutonnyMJ from the Character panel. Until the font is applied, the text will always look broken.
