How to Write a Bangla Application — Step by Step
A properly written Bangla application has these parts, in this order:
- Date (তারিখ) — at the top, right or left (for example ১৫ আগস্ট, ২০২৬).
- To (বরাবর) — the post held by the person you are writing to, and the name and address of the institution. The rule is to write the post, not the person's name.
- Subject (বিষয়) — the purpose in one line, for example "ছুটির জন্য আবেদন".
- Salutation (সম্বোধন) — "জনাব," or "মহোদয়,".
- Body — opening with "সবিনয় নিবেদন এই যে,", then your reason and what you need, briefly.
- The request — the closing appeal, beginning "অতএব, মহোদয়ের নিকট আকুল আবেদন এই যে…".
- Signed by (নিবেদক) — your name below, with your post or class and roll number, and a mobile number if needed.
- Enclosures (সংযুক্তি) — certificates or documents listed out; essential in a job application.
The Format of an Official Government Letter
A letter from a government office has a few extra parts that an ordinary application does not:
- Heading — "গণপ্রজাতন্ত্রী বাংলাদেশ সরকার" at the very top, then the office name and address.
- Memo number (স্মারক নম্বর) — on the left, with the date on the right. This is how the file is found later.
- Reference (সূত্র) — if you are replying to an earlier letter, its memo number and date.
- Signature block — the name in brackets, the post below it, and a phone number or email if needed.
- Copies (অনুলিপি) — the list of people copied in, under "সদয় অবগতির জন্য".
Government documents are expected to use the Nikosh font and Unicode — the .doc file you download from this page opens in Nikosh already. If you do not have the font, get it from Nikosh Font Download.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving out the subject line — an application without one is treated as incomplete.
- An over-long introduction — state your reason clearly in two or three sentences.
- Emotional or colloquial language — an application uses the formal, standard register.
- Missing the date or the signature — without both, the application is not accepted.
- Spelling mistakes — run it through the Bangla Spell Checker before submitting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the application have to be handwritten, or can I print it?
Most offices and institutions accept a printed application, but you must sign it by hand at the bottom. Some schools and examinations still ask for it to be handwritten — check what the institution requires.
Whose name do I put after "To"?
Not a person's name — write the post, such as "প্রধান শিক্ষক" or "উপজেলা নির্বাহী অফিসার". That way the application reaches the right desk whoever holds the job.
What is a memo number?
Every letter from a government office has its own file number, used to find the letter later and quoted as the "reference" in any reply.
I have no Bangla keyboard — how do I write?
Switch on "Type in Avro Phonetic" above and write with English letters to get Bangla (nam → নাম). To dictate instead, use Bangla Voice Typing.
