How to Write an Amount in Words on a Cheque
Writing the amount in words alongside the figures is the legal convention on a bank cheque — if the two disagree, the amount written in words is the one that counts. A few rules worth remembering:
- End with "মাত্র" (matro) — it stops anyone adding words afterwards.
- If there are poisa, write them separately after the taka: … টাকা পঞ্চাশ পয়সা মাত্র.
- When writing the figures, finish with
/-and leave no blank space. - Bangladesh counts in lakh and crore, not millions — so 25,00,000 is পঁচিশ লক্ষ (twenty-five lakh).
If you are writing the cheque in English, use the Taka in English line above — it is also written in the lakh–crore system that Bangladeshi banks use.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I write a cheque amount in words?
Write the amount, add "taka", and finish with "matro" — so 1,234.50 becomes এক হাজার দুইশত চৌত্রিশ টাকা পঞ্চাশ পয়সা মাত্র. Type the number on this page and the correct sentence is produced for you.
Are 1 lakh and 1 million the same?
No. 1 lakh = 100,000, while 1 million = 10,00,000 (ten lakh). This tool shows the English wording in both systems — lakh–crore and million–billion.
Can I type the number in Bangla digits?
Yes — ১২৩৪ or 1234 both work, and commas are not a problem.
